Take a trip on the Mary Sunley!
Based at Lyme View Marina, near Poynton, SK10 4PH
What can you do when you can't go for a
walk in the countryside? Why not come for a trip on a slow moving canal boat,
the Mary Sunley, and enjoy the views across the beautiful Cheshire
countryside?
Mary Sunley is a 62 foot narrow boat, operated by a Charity and
run by volunteers. Trained and qualified Skippers and crew operate the boat
for all trips.
It has been specially designed and built to enable people, including those
in wheelchairs, to access the boat, and enjoy trips along the Macclesfield
canal. It was launched in 1980 and refitted in the late 1990s and named after
Mary Sunley, the wife of one of the original benefactors, Mr Bernard Sunley.
The Mary Sunley is based at Lyme View Marina, on the Macclesfield
Canal, south east of Poynton in Cheshire, and can be hired for trips during
daylight hours, primarily by groups who meet its charitable objectives. A
limited number of private parties can be booked for a small additional charge.
Trips are normally of around 4 hours duration, although this can be varied
if required.
The objects of the Charity are:- to provide or assist in the provision
of facilities, in the interests of social welfare for recreation or other
leisure-time occupation of persons who have need of such facilities by reason
of their youth, age, infirmity or disablement, poverty or social and economic
circumstances with the object of improving their conditions of life.
Facilities
The boat has a main cabin with seating for 12 people, large picture windows,
and is centrally heated.
It was specially designed and built with the disabled in mind. It is fully equipped
to cater for disabled people, with a hydraulic lift on the boat for easy access
to the cabin, and a toilet with wheelchair access. Kitchen facilities include
a cooker with oven, cutlery and crockery for your use. There is an easy path
leading from the car park to the boat.
What users should bring
Groups can bring on board their own picnic meals and drinks and use the
galley to prepare them. It is advisable to bring cool boxes for keeping items
cool during the summer
Tea and coffee can be prepared on board, although milk and sugar etc. will
have to be brought on board as the boat does not carry food or drink other
than water. In addition, groups should bring their own tea towels.
By arrangement when booking the trip, the boat can stop along the canal
to enable passengers to visit local Pubs or restaurants for a meal, or to
buy sandwiches, fish and chips etc.
Any special personal equipment, personal toiletries or medication should
be brought on the trip.
Bring warm clothing if you want to sit on the forward viewing deck - sitting
in the open can be chilly for elderly people even on a warm and sunny day.
Number of passengers
Mary Sunley is licensed to carry a maximum of 12 passengers at any one time,
including helpers, with not more than 4 persons confined to wheelchairs. Wheelchairs
should be not more than 26.5 inches wide, electric wheelchairs are not permitted.
Helpers
If any person with disabilities needs assistance or support, they must be
accompanied by a helper. The skipper and crew are available to advise on the
boat's facilities but are not in a position to give personal assistance to
individual passengers.
Trips
Trips are restricted to daylight hours, and currently normally operate from
mid April through to the end of October along the top pound of the Macclesfield
Canal where there are no locks, north towards Marple, or south towards Macclesfield;
returning to Lyme View Marina.
The trips are usually for 4 hours, but can be arranged for shorter or longer
periods if required. If passengers wish to visit any of the places of interest
along the canal or arrange meals off the boat, then this can be arranged.
The boat is charged at an hourly rate, however there is a minimum charge
for hiring of 4 hours, see below.
All trips start and finish at:-

Directions to the Lyme View Marina
From the A523, the Macclesfield / Stockport road, turn East at the Little
Chef restaurant on to Street Lane. This junction is located about a mile north
of the Adlington traffic light junction which is adjacent to the Leigh Arms
Public House, and is just over a mile south of the centre of Poynton. About
three quarters of a mile along Street Lane at the T junction, turn left onto
Skellom Green Lane.
Follow the road for a mile, (it becomes Wood Lane West), and after a mile,
at the cross roads, continue straight on, up the narrow road, across the old
railway bridge and the canal bridge, and turn left into the Marina.
Once in the marina, keep to the right, and go through the metal gate, follow
the narrow road around the first marina basin for about 250 yards, and drive
into the parking area that is located next to the canal.
Mary Sunley is moored on the canal near the right hand corner
of the car park as you face the canal.
